The Beastie Boys and Spike Jonze have teamed up for another video classic collaboration...

The opportunity arose for me to watch and review the video for “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” by Beastie Boys and Santigold which seemed perfect since I just reviewed Hot Sauce Committee Part Two and this was the sleeper hit that ended up being my favorite track on the album.

Beastie Boys - OK, now fast forward to me sitting in my back yard actually watching this video for the first time and I wishing I’d been filming a reaction video for YouTube; I’m sure the look on my face was priceless. As with many (all?) Beastie Boys videos, the song is the backdrop for the party, heist, or in this case an assassination attempt.  We are treated to the Barbie and Ken versions of the Beasties and Santigold performing a concert to a crowd of action figures while being watched from a grassy knoll by sniper action figures wearing “anti-Beastie Boy” shirts.

From there, we’re treated to mischief and mayhem Beastie-style, with a healthy helping of zombies, a shark attack that almost made our fearless threesome a twosome, inside jokes and a Yeti. There’s also a revenge plot against the Boys for killing off a comrade of the assassins and then a happy-seeming ending out on the water, with a very The Funeral –esque twist.

“Don’t Play No Game” marks the fourth video Spike Jonze has done with the Beasties and his fingerprints are all over this thing, in the quirkiness, the storyline (story written by MCA), and even the way it’s shot. It is a lot like a not-live-action version of their “Sabotage” collaboration.

All that being said, this song is a perfect backdrop for this 11 minute mini movie/music video, I suggest you ch-ch-ch-check it out!
