Natalie Merchant by Natalie Merchant is the Pick of the Week

From the department of making you feel old comes this little factoid:  Natalie Merchant has been making music for 33 years, and has been a solo artist for the last 20.  That blows me away.  I didn't become a fan until Our Time in Eden and I have very fond memories of listening to Tigerlily in college which seems like yesterday but was in fact two decades ago.  Pardon me while I go put on some old man pants.

Truth be told I kind of stopped paying that much attention to her sometimes in the early 00s, but found her again with her brilliant retelling of old poems in Leave Your Sleep.  That album was on of the best from 2010 and it made me go back and revisit all of her solo work.  File me in the fan category and color me excited about this new one.

Natalie Merchant is, in fact, her first album of completely original songs in 13 years (she spent most of the 2000s covering other peoples music.)  She's described it as dealing with issues of "love gained and lost, regret, denial, surrender, greed, destructiveness, defeat, and occasional triumph."  Which puts it pretty much in the same category as all her albums.  It also makes it this weeks pick.

Also out this week that looks interesting:

All My Friends: Celebrating The Songs & Voice Of Gregg Allman - Various Artists:  Folks like Susan Tedeschi, Widespread Panic, Vince Gill, Dr. John and more came out to celebrate the great southern fried rocker.

Corazon (Deluxe Edition) - Santana:  The classic rockers first Latin music album features collaborations with ChocQuib Town, Lila Downs, Ziggy Marley, Gloria Estefan and more.  The Amazon exclusive deluxe edition features 3 bonus tracks and a DVD.

Childhood Home - Ben and Ellen Harper:  Ben and his mother created a concept album about home and family life.

Shine On - Sarah McLachlan:  The beautiful-voiced songstress' eighth album was inspired by her father's passing.  I'm not really a fan, but with some 40 million albums sold this is worth a mention.
