In discussing my formative years as a music obsessive I tend to concentrate on the early 90s alternative scenes and more specifically the grunge movement.  It is mostly true that those bands coming out of Seattle - Peal Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana etc, - were some of the earliest bands that I really loved.  That sound helped create the music nerd I am today.

Yet, if I am to lay out the entire history of my musical history we have to start a little earlier.  I was (and sheepishly must admit still am) and great lover of hair metal.  Poison, Mötley Crüe, White Snake and yes, Bon Jovi created some of the cheesiest, ridiculous - not really metal - heavy metal music ever made.  But gawd help me I still love to crank that crap up and bang my head.

Cripes just looking through the track list of New Jersey brings back a million memories and I'm gonna have "Lay Your Hands On Me" stuck in my head all day.  Sometimes I wish that I'd been born decades earlier so I could have all those great 60s and 70s classic rock track to have grown up on.  Then I look back on all those dudes with big hair, bad make-up and ripped jeans and I realize I was born just in time.

This super deluxe edition contains three disks of music.  There is the original album remastered with three extra b-sides on it.  A second disk contains songs that were originally conceived for the album when it was planned to be a double disk entitled Sons of Beaches.  The third disk is a DVD with an 88 minute behind-the-scenes documentary and seven official music videos.  Plus there's a 60-page book.

Also out this week that looks interesting:

The Midnight Ramble Sessions, Volume 3 - Levon Helm Band: The late, great drummer serves up another dish of memorable live performances.

The Division Bell 20th Anniversary Deluxe Box - Pink Floyd:  The band's last studio album gets a giant 7 disk set.  Unless you are a vinyl collector though this isn't all that interesting.  The set includes a remastered version of the album on two LPs plus several vinyl singles.  For those more into the digital than analog its also been remastered in HD audio on a 5.1 surround sound audio mix.

Remedy - Old Crow Medicine Show:  These guys make a fun mix of country/blugrass, rock and craziness.  I always look forward to new stuff by them.

Sketches in Spain - Steve Wynn:  The former Dream Syndicate player has been making music for decades that isn't always available in the US.  This set pulls 19 tracks that were previously only available in Spain.

I'm a Song - Jim Lauderdale:  The lovable country crooner's latest includes duets with Lee Ann Womack, Buddy Miller and Patty Loveless.

Gimme Something Good (7" vinyl) - Ryan Adams:  I normally don't mention vinyl releases as I don't have a record player, but Ryan always gets a mention.  I hope this means he'll be releasing a proper album soon.
