New Music Tuesday - New CDs

The Easter Bunny has one more stop to make before he heads for his vacation home in- where does the EB go to chill after making his annual run? Anyway, this week's new releases offer up some good, good stuff and my Easter basket will runneth over tomorrow.

Let's start with a couple albums I've not yet ordered: Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris both have new sets out this week. I've been listening to Earle's better half of late but haven't spent much time with the man himself. Emmylou Harris' new album is the reason I write this column each week. It slipped my attention until now. I'll need Hard Bargain at some point. She really is amazing.S

Let's talk about a few blues items this week…

Robert Johnson is the iconic figure who "started it all." It's not remotely possible to calculate the impact he had on music. His entire recorded works are being repackaged and reissued by SonyLegacy in honor of what would have been the mythic bluesman's 100th birthday.

Speaking of repackaging, anniversaries, and Robert Johnson, let's talk Derek & The Dominos. Now technically, the Dominos seemed more inspired by Freddie King than Johnson, but lead Domino Eric Clapton's reverence for Johnson is well chronicled. Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs turns 40 this year, and in the recording industry that means it's time for a major re-issue. Multiple packages are being offered to commemorate this landmark album, including a single disc, 2-CD, and massive box set. The Easter Bunny (aka TheWifeToWhomI'mMarried) is bringing me the Johnson Centennial and the Super Deluxe Derek. Fantastic.

Soul/blues master Bobby Rush has a new set out this week, Show You A Good Time. The 75-year old Louisiana native isn't slowing down at all, continuing to release new records at a pace that should shame men one-fourth his age.

It's all Louisiana, all the time this week in the blues world as Tab Benoit's Medicine is also out this week. He is joined by fellow Louisianan Anders Osborne, who co-wrote several of these tracks with Benoit and also provides rhythm guitar and backing vocals. I already have this one in hand and you will be reading more about in the coming days, dear readers. While you wait, check out the titles I've mentioned and these others and go buy yourself something awesome.
