New Music Tuesday: Ron Sexsmith, Gina Sicilia, Lucinda Williams, Beady Eye, Big Head Todd & The Monsters

March comes in like a lion with a strong first New Music Tuesday!
  |   Comments

We are loaded with goodness today, my friends! It's the first day of March, the first Tuesday of March, and we are getting the month started just right. Ron Sexsmith has a new set out this week and Jordan Richardson's review leads me to believe we should all check it out. That's our starting point, kids. It gets better and more interesting so stick with me and we'll take a look at a few more…

Lucinda Williams
Blessed

I think we all know any list of the great songwriters begins with Bob Dylan but it's wide open after that. I don't know where Williams should be "ranked" but any list that doesn't include her is a waste of your time. Our dear friend and good buddy Donald Gibson interviewed Williams about this new record and some of the gems of her past. I think we're all excited to hear this one.

Gina Sicilia
Can't Control Myself

It feels like we've been talking about this one for awhile, and at long last it is here. Singer/songwriter Gina Sicilia is back with her third album, a 10-song set she and Dave Gross banged out together at Gross' studio in 2010. I've heard the album in its entirety and it's exciting to hear the arc of an artist's growth. She's only 25 and this album feels like a leap, not a step, forward. We'll be discussing this album further when my full review goes live later this week.

Beady Eye
Different Gear, Still Speeding

They call themselves Beady Eye; I call them Not Oasis. I'm sure my appetite for this record is a lot stronger than much of the rest of America and even I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm an unapologetic Oasis fan. As much as I loved that band and even enjoyed Liam Gallagher's classic sneer, I was always in the Noel Gallagher camp. I'm going to buy this record but I'm not sure how much I want to hear Oasis without Noel and that's the basic composition of this band. I'll buy it. I'll listen to it with open ears and an earnest desire to like it but I'm not without my reservations.

Big Head Blues Club and Big Head Todd & The Monsters
100 Years of Robert Johnson
...

The Boulder Beat goes on... I briefly lived near Boulder, Colorado and learned about Boulder Beat and ran into a fair number of Big Head Todd & The Monsters fans. I've generally found them a pleasant, tolerable listen but they never elicited any sort of passion from me. This album may change my mind. They recorded it in five days with a host of blues heavyweights -- Charlie Musselwhite, Hubert Sumlin, BB King, Honeyboy Edwards -- all in honor of what would have been the iconic Robert Johnson's 100th birthday. BHT&TM, Honeyboy Edwards, and many others are participating in a tour promoting Johnson and the album. I'll have a copy of this, too, I do believe.

Yeah, kids, we happy. It's great to be here. It's great to be anywhere. It's a great week for music. Rings on all your fingers.
