New Releases: Albert King, Mad Season Re-Issues, Rilo Kiley Rarities, Mudhoney, Josh Krajcik

The biggest releases this week come in the form of a couple killer re-issues, one of which I've already reviewed and the other of which I soon shall. Abert King's 1967 masterpiece for Stax Records Born Under A Bad Sign has been remastered and expanded and should be part of every music fan's library.

So-called supergroups often disappoint but Mad Season featured my two favorite singers, Layne Staley and Mark Lanegan, as well as Pearl Jam's Mike McCready and Baker Saunders. They recorded and released a single album, MadSeason630.jpgAbove, and also released a live VHS (look it up, kids). This week, Above is released in a 2CD/DVD deluxe edition. The album was remastered and therer are live cuts, rarities, and a couple of "new" songs (more on that in a moment) and the live VHS makes its DVD debut in this package. As for the new songs, the reason Mad Season only made one record isn't because they didn't have enough ideas or interest to create more music together. Music was recorded for a second album but busy schedules of Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees as well as health and substance abuse issues of Saunders and Staley kept the work from being completed. For this re-issue, Lanegan chose completed music, penned lyrics, and laid down vocals to bring a couple more Mad Season songs to completion. Martin contributes a lengthy essay to the liner notes from this special album and I can't wait for my package to arrive.

While we're hearkening back to the days of Seattle rock, we have new music from one of the first bands from that scene: Mudhoney. Mark Arm & Co. return with a new LP entitled Vanishing Point.

Rilo Kiley is no more as frontwoman Jenny Lewis has moved on to a solo career but the alt-country band is cleaning the closet and clearning out the vaults with a rarities collection this week called Rkives.

Lastly, X-Factor Season 1 finalist Josh Krajcik has his first album since the completion of the show. Our X-Factor correspondent Heather took a strong liking to Josh (although she preferred Chris Rene) so I'll look forward to hearing her thoughts on his new album Blindly, Lonely, Lovely.

With that... here are your New Music Tuesday releases for April 2, 2013.
