Scotty McCreery - Clear As Day

There's no doubt the big story of the week is the debut release from American Idol Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery. American Idol enjoyed a ratings renaissance and there are many theories about how and why that happened but clearly a field of younger contestants had to help and soon-to-be 18-year old champ McCreery was a big part of that. He releases his solo debut after two big singles helped pave the way. I have to believe this is going to be a huge seller at least through Christmas. Check out the BlindedBySound review of Scotty McCreery's Clear As Day.

If Scotty McCreery is looking to be the new face of country, it's only fitting we have a special release from one of the original pioneers of the genre. Hank Williams Sr. is a mythical icon of country music and another of those legendary artists who blazed a trail and left our world too soon. The bones of his archives have seemingly been picked to death in the decades since his death but this week we hear 12 previously unheard Williams songs in the form of The Lost Notebooks Of Hank Williams. These songs were written in lyrical form but never recorded or put to music... until now. Bob Dylan, Jack White, Norah Jones, Lucinda Williams, Alan Jackson are among the artists taking part. I think we can all be grateful Hank's son isn't part of this collection in light of his recent outrageous and bizarre tirade.

Another country legend is heard from this week as Merle Haggard releases Working In Tennessee. Also from the world of country is a new record from Rodney Atkins.

The alternative rock world has a few titles this week worth noting. Indie singer/songwriter Feist has a new album called Metals and Indigo Girls have a new set as well, Beauty Queen Sister. I got to see IG in concert as part of Lilith Fair many years back and they played a tight, dynamic set. I've never been a huge fan but I remember enjoying their performance that night.

MUTEMATH has new music this week, Odd Soul. The set was recorded in seclusion in New Orleans, which seems contradictory on some level but that's how they did it. They recorded and self-produced it in an attempt to keep outside influences just that: outside.

The blues collective known as Cash Box Kings have a new set out this week for Blind Pig Records called Holler And Stomp, which I'll soon be investigating in full. I liked their I-94 Blues album for Blue Bella Records last year and I'm eager to hear what this collection of songs holds.

I'm sure it's been happening for weeks now but it seems to be reaching critical mass with this first New Music Tuesday in October: Christmas albums. There are a slew of them throughout the list this week and you...can...have...them. I'm not anti-Christmas nor anti-Christmas music. I just don't often hear many collections in any given year that bring anything exciting or new to the mix. Someone must buy them because they keep getting made.
