35 Years of Stony Plain by Various ArtistsMuch has rightly been made by blues fans and industry folks about Alligator Records turning 40 this year and the excellent 2-CD retrospective that commemorates it, but they are not the only specialty label celebrating an important birthday.

Canada's Stony Plain label is celebrating its 35th birthday this year and they, too, are issuing a major package May 10 to celebrate. Stony Plain is currently home to the amazing blues guitarists Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard, Joe Louis Walker, and Rory Block, just to name a few. They've made major contributions to the blues but have also issued major releases in jazz, folk, country, R&B, and other roots genres and that is the story they tell with this 35th Anniversary collection.

The package gathers tracks from throughout the label's history and paints a portrait of the diversity of their offerings. That eclecticism can be difficult to sequence and separate but the folks at Stony Plain have attempted to do that by devoting Disc 1 to the roots-oriented singer/songwriters while Disc 2 features their blues, jazz, and swing artists. It's an imperfect dividing line as many of these names – Steve Earle, Maria Muldaur, Jeff Healey, Emmylou Harris – have defied genre classification but when you skim the tracklisting, there is an internal logic and it all adds up to a hell of a lot of good music from an indie label in Canada.

Also making this package special is that eight of the tracks have never been released before, including four by Blues Hall of Famer Robert Nighthawk. Here is the complete tracklisting:
