One of the things on my to-do list is to attend the Newport Folk Festival in New Port, Rhode Island. Started in 1959 as the counterpart to Newport’s Jazz Festival, the folk festival is noted for helping give artists like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan their first dose of national exposure. Who knew Rhode Island was so kick ass?
For those like me who didn’t make it this year, our friends at NPR once again have our backs. They have full sets from all of the bands that played the festival – available for stream or for download, which is pretty much the next best thing. While the entire lineup is amazing, we here at BBS recommend checking out the sets from Gillian Welch, Mavis Staples, Tegan and Sara, The Civil Wars, and The David Wax Museum (yes, I will continue to mention them as much as possible because their unique Mexi-Americana sound is one of the most distinct things out there right now. And because they send hand written thank you notes when you pre-ordered their last record and I’m a sucker for polite people).
