Albany, NY Set List Wrecking Ball Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Tour 4/13/2012

Before we discuss tonight's Springsteen setlist in Albany, NY, I'd like to offer up an open letter to The Boss because this is just the strangest thing ever. I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later, but- well, here's my letter and then we'll talk shop.

Dear Bruce Springsteen,

Thank you for eavesdropping on the private conversation I had with 11 today. I only wish the next time you possibly illegally wiretap our phone conversations and decide to heed our advice, you do it prior to a show we're going to end and not one you're going to play in, say, Buffalo.

Love and kisses,

Okay, if you're wondering what in the name of Vincent Lopez's ass I'm talking about, this is the story and I'm not making it up. 11 and I were on the phone talking about :: wait for it :: Springsteen set lists and as we were talking, I noted a difficult task Bruce does particularly poorly: representing The River in his set lists. It's one of his most important albums, it's a double album, and about the only song he likes to play from it is "Out In The Streets" (aka "OITFS).

The River is a bit of an unwieldy record that feels like two records packaged together more than a double album but there is so much great material on there and since the Reunion Tour, he just won't fucking play any of it. Tonight, we get one of the few semi-regular River songs in "Ramrod," the not often played "The Ties That Bind," and a shocker in "Point Blank." Incidentally and definitely worth noting "Point Blank" was played at my first E Street Band show. There will be a quiz later. "Ramrod" was apparently chosen from a sign from an audience member in honor of drummer Max Weinberg's birthday. Happy birthday, Mighty!

As cool as all that is and it is cool the big shocker tonight is "Rendezvous." It was cut during sessions for Darkness On The Edge Of Town; a live version was released onTracks and now a studio version was recently released on The Promise.

This doesn't top last night's show in Detroit but there were some damn, damn good songs played in tonight's set and it's got me praying Nashville gets added to the second run of N. American tour dates this fall.
