Springsteen Serenades Philly With A "Seaside Bar Song" On 1st Of 2-Night Stand (Setlist March 28, 2012)

The setlist is still pretty static but "Seaside Bar Song" was a big shocker tonight in Philadelphia

Bruce Springsteen - Philadelphia, PA Setlist March 28, 2012 Wrecking Ball

The first of two nights in Philadelphia and let's go ahead and dispense with suspense: no "Incident on 57th Street" tonight so we'll look for that tomorrow. With that out of the way, let's talk about what did get played.

There was one tour premiere and another rarity performed tonight and the premiere is a stunner: "Seaside Bar Song" from Tracks. The Springsteen songbook is extensive so guessing would be difficult under any circumstance but I would have never guessed this one. Ever. Unless I started alphabetically and started with "A Night With The Jersey Devil" and kept guessing until I got to "Seaside." Did not see this one coming. Not at all (as an unimportant sidenote, I spent a good portion of my day listening to the first two discs ofTracks).

He followed that with "Does This Bus Stop With 82nd Street?" It was played first on this tour in Tampa but doesn't come out often and is a treat from his debut Greetings From Asbury Park.

Now might be a good time to mention something that has surprised me on the new material front. "Shackled And Drawn" from Wrecking Ball was the first to get punted from the set list. I figured at some point a few of the new songs would get pruned but "Shackled" is one of the uptempo rockers and I thought it would be a good candidate to stay. I was wrong. Who knew? It reminds me a little of "My Lucky Day" from Working On A Dream. That album was crap but "Lucky" is a decent song and easily one of the most lively from it but it didn't have much staying power on the tour (unlike the warcrime of fucking "Outlaw Pete"). Maybe "Shackled" will resurface but it's been gone the last several shows.

The 1-2 of "Atlantic City" and "Easy Money" were once again performed as were "The Rising" Part 1 & 2: "Lonesome Day" and "The Rising." People won't believe me but I really did like "Lonesome Day" at one time. I'm mad at him for overplaying it. I'm mad at him for killing this song by not killing it or at least putting it on fucking life support.

The encore followed the Boston model with "Raise Your Hand" going in the "American Land" slot (minus the Peter Wolf cameo). That's a total upgrade but I would hate to see him get too attached to "Raise." The encore needs a little lift. "Raise" is a fun one to be on rotation for that slot but let's hope it doesn't overstay its welcome.

So that's Philly, Night 1. I'm looking forward to seeing what Night 2 brings and I'll be here to share the news with you.
