33rd Blues Music Awards

The 33rd Blues Music Award nominations were announced today and Tedeschi Trucks Band, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones, Tab Benoit, and Johnny Sansone led the way with four nods apiece and winners be announced at the May 10 ceremony in Memphis.

In addition to the four-time nominees, there were also several receiving three apiece, including Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges, Lazy Lester, David Maxwell, Ana Popovic and Johnny Rawls.

Album Of The Year nominations went to the collaborative effort Chicago Blues A Living History - The (R)Evolution ContinuesRock And A Hard Place by Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges, The Lord Is Waiting & The Devil Is Too by Sansone, Sugar Ray's Evening, Benoit's Medicine, and Tedeschi Trucks Band's Revelator.

Band Of The Year nominations went to Memphis' own The Bo-Keys, Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, Sugar Ray & the Bluetones, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Tommy Castro Band, and Trampled Under Foot.

Awards are handed out in 26 categories and while there are Hall of Famers and past winners included in this year's nominees, there are also more than 30 artists receiving first-time recognition.

BMA nomination time is usually a lot of fun for me because on balance the nomination committees do a good job, even if I have my minor quibbles. I'm ecstatic for The Bo-Keys and their Got To Get Back! and the great Living History album and its creators.

I'm less ecstatic to see Duke Robillard's Low Down & Tore Up and Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne's An Old Rock On A Roll not included in the nominations (although both men were nominated as instrumentalists).

The big shocker in the nominations is the omission of Gregg Allman and his Low Country Blues, an album that dominated blues radio stations and won rave reviews. I would have lost a great deal of your money he'd be on the list several times.

Check out the list of nominations below. Did your favorite make the cut?
