I hear you, 2011. Thanks for being here. What a HUGE week of killer new releases. I'm so thankful to all the people who got me Amazon gift cards for Christmas because this slate is going to clean me out.
Low Country Blues
Allman is going back to his roots on his first solo album in 14 years and he's teamed with super producer T Bone Burnett to create it. I've been hearing amazing buzz it. I've preordered my copy and can't wait for it to arrive sometime later today. Allman is one of the most authentic blues singers in the rock universe and I can't wait to hear him tackle some of the standards he's recorded. I am all over this.
Devil Got His Way
First off, this is one of the coolest album titles I've come across in awhile. I just love the phrase. This is Fowler's second Blind Pig album and it's fantastic, a real progression from his fine Sugar Shack. I'll have a full review on the site this week.
West Side Soul
Magic Sam's Delmark debut is one of the landmark records in music history. If you're one of those serious music fans, you have to have a copy of this in your collection. This is an essential set in the evolution of blues and its influence on artists of different genres really can't be overstated. It's vital and Delmark has remastered it from the analog, stereo source tapes. I've preordered this and can't wait to fall in love with this album yet again.
Rich DelGrosso & Jonn "Del Toro" Richardson
Time Slips On By
I am new to the mandolin tradition in the blues but since learning of it, I've fallen in love with it. Rich DelGrosso is a phenomenal player who has been nominated repeatedly for Blues Music Awards and Richardson is a fantastic guitar player who has backed Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Otis Taylor, and more. These two have teamed on a 14-track album that is sure to be a factor on blues radio and at next year's BMAs. I'll be dialing this one up soon it, too, is on my "to be reviewed" stack. Stay tuned. We'll be talking more about this one as well.
Live On 10 Legs
The mighty, mighty El Bicho has already reviewed this live compilation from Pearl Jam, celebrating their 20 year anniversary. Much of the Pearl Jam legacy is built on their reputation as a live band and this collection brings together performances of songs from across their catalog as well as a few choice covers. Hardcore fans will have live versions of many of these songs. Casual fans should plunk down to hear PJ doing what they do best.
The King Is Dead
This title isn't actually on my list but I know Decemberists are huge with a lot of indie fans. Truth is I haven't listened much to them. I know the name but haven't spent much time listening to them. It's a major release for many. Hell, I might come back to it. For now, yours if you want it.
I know I'm leaving some good records out, so here's the full list for the week. See anything you can't live without? Let's discuss.
